About this fungus

Fleecy Milkcap is a fungus in the Russulaceae family. Its habitat and field characteristics are summarised below.

A massive chalky-white funnel with a dry felted cap and unusually widely spaced gills.

What to check

Confirm brittle flesh, white latex, decurrent distant gills and the absence of a ring or volva.

Variation

Age and handling add cream, ochre or brown stains, while the cap becomes deeply funnel-shaped.

Lookalikes

Lactifluus bertillonii and other white milkcaps overlap closely and may need chemical and microscopic work.

Habitat and range

The narrow European concept is mycorrhizal with broadleaf trees, particularly beech. Similar fungi elsewhere may carry different names.

Food safety

Inedible.
