About this fungus

Giant Funnel is a fungus in the Tricholomataceae family. Its habitat and field characteristics are summarised below.

A massive white to cream funnel, often appearing in troops or broad rings.

What to check

Check the strongly decurrent gills, thick pale cap and absence of a ring or volva. Record the full ring or troop and preserve material for spores.

Variation

Young caps are convex with rolled margins, then flatten and become deeply funnel-shaped. Old surfaces may crack or stain.

Lookalikes

Several large pale funnels overlap. Smaller white funnel mushrooms include poisonous species, so size alone is not a safety character.

Habitat and range

A litter and soil saprotroph of temperate grassland edges, clearings and open woodland.

Food safety

Edibility is uncertain or disputed.
