About this fungus

Truncated-spored Bolete is a fungus in the Boletaceae family. Its habitat and field characteristics are summarised below.

A small cracked brown bolete with pink showing through the cracks and blue-bruising yellow pores.

What to check

Record cap cracking, flesh colour beneath it, pore bruising, stem colours and eastern North American location.

Variation

Caps may be only finely cracked in damp weather and range from brown to reddish brown.

Lookalikes

Several Xerocomellus look almost identical. Western North American fungi formerly called X. truncatus are now assigned to other species.

Habitat and range

The modern species concept is eastern North American and mycorrhizal with broadleaf trees. Geography is part of the identification.
